5 Eco-Friendly and Natural Cleaning DIYS for the Home

household toxic cleaners

Did you know-there are more than 100 types of common consumer products with at least one, and many times multiple ingredients in them that can be linked to cancer, development issues, hormonal imbalance, and a host of other health issues that can arise from daily repeated doses over a period of years? This article from the New York Times goes into a bit more detail, but think about this.....some of the options we use on a daily basis and even repeatedly with toxic substances are in the form of nail polish, shampoo, lotions, soaps, household cleaners, laundry soaps, and even dish soaps.

In fact, some of the products that are consumed and used every day here in the states are even banned in Canada and some overseas countries. Imagine that - knowing that a product is unsafe for you and deciding that hmmm..... maybe it should NOT be used! Some people may be good with adding toxins to their body and changing their DNA make-up, hormonal balance and adding cancer cells to their body - If that is you - you might just keep on walking by -

If that is NOT you, and you think maybe it is time to change a few things, bring a few simple and natural products into your home for the benefit of yourself, your family, and whomever may enter into that home of yours.... I got you!

all natural cleaners

When we first started our natural journey 15 years ago we started simple and began making a few changes slowly to start providing natural and synthetic free options to our home. I couldn't believe how easy it was to integrate and even make some of our own products and still provide the best for the family.

When I say that it is super EASY to take a step forward and begin to make those changes for yourself-I REALLY mean it!!! Many of the things that we use everyday for cleaning, bathing, and everyday health support can be switched out, made, or even bought (if needed) to provide you even better cleansing power at sometimes even a fraction of the cost!!! I will say that there are so many options out there and it can be easy to get lost, or overwhelmed when making the changes. No worries - that is what I am here for! If you stick with me I will walk you along that path and give you everything you could possibly need to integrate natural products into your home. I have found it to be an absolutely fun journey and I hope you can say the same for yourself as you walk this path.

These 5 eco-friendly and natural cleaning DIYS for your home are a great addition to your cleaning regime. I have kept super easy for you and they only take a few minutes at most to make if you have all materials on hand. For even more fun, you can add essential oils to your blends for added cleansing and the benefit of natural aromatherapy support for the home.

5 natural DIYS for cleaning the home

With a family of 5 in our house we are always needing these 5 go-to's and they have been a sure fire win here in our home. I also love these easy DIY products are eco-friendly, are natural and not harmful to the environment, and that I can have the kiddos help with the cleaning and not worry about them inhaling toxic chemicals or getting any cleaners on their skin and adverse reactions that those would cause. All of these easy recipes are safe, natural, and non-toxic and can be used by kids and adults alike for a family fun cleaning day! Another great thing about these simple recipes is that they are affordable too!

Let's talk simple cleaning products for a sec.... Vinegar and Baking Soda.

Seriously- DID YOU KNOW that these two are super amazing natural power house cleaners in themselves!?! The versatility and cleaning power that these two simple products have is beyond amazing yet, oh-so-simple. And the best part is that you can easily access these from your grocery store or buy in bulk at a local Costco, SAMS club or even Walmart.

Baking Soda: this stuff is some seriously good stuff. I use it at home ALL THE TIME for cleaning and deodorizing carpets and rooms. I have also used it in homemade toothpaste, natural face washes and in cleaning the bathroom of grit and grime and in water to balance the body's ph when we have an upset stomach. Check this post out to see over 56 household uses for baking soda. Some of these may blow you away!

Vinegar: When growing up the only thing I knew about vinegar was that it absolutely stinks! As I began this natural path to cleaning and ridding the home of toxins, I have now gotten to where I actually like the smell of vinegar - I know that when I smell that I am ridding the home of pesky microscopic germs and bacteria that I can't see, and I know that I am using natural products to do it. I have used vinegar in many of our cleaning products, and disinfectants, but weirdly enough - I have also used vinegar to bake with too (and oh the moistness that it adds to those decadent chocolate cakes). This post has a boundless list of ways that you can use vinegar easily and simply in the home and replace many other cleaning products with this natural cleaner :)

3. Natural toilet scrub

(this job is soooo not my favorite, but the super easy cleansing power of vinegar and baking soda make this job a breeze. This one is also actually my kids favorite job because of the fun reaction of baking soda and vinegar!)

easy natural DIY toilet cleaner

Basic Recipe:

1/2 baking soda

1/2 cup of distilled vinegar

Instructions:

Pour the baking soda into the toilet slowly as to avoid splatter. Add the vinegar. You will immediately see a reaction of bubbling and fizzing when the two meet. Let sit in toilet for about 15 minutes, then scrub with a toilet brush. Flush the mixture after scrubbing and if needed scrub remaining residue once more. Follow up the toilet rim and seat with the all purpose spray you made from above.

4. Descaler / Stove Cleaner

Natural DIY stove descaler

Basic Recipe:

5-6 Tbsp of baking soda

2-3 Tbsp distilled vinegar

Additional options:

*Citrus essential oil is an amazing natural cleaner that works wonders for built up grime and for oily and sticky residue. It is a great addition to this paste.

Instructions:

This recipe is meant to be used as a paste. Place baking soda in a bowl and slowly (oh so slowly....) add the vinegar. You will have a reaction of fizzing and bubbling. As the reaction calms continue to stir and incorporate each together. You are looking to create a paste. {Add lemon essential oil for an extra powerful punch for built on grime}. You can use this paste on stoves where the grime has built up around burners, on pots and pans that do not want to come clean, or even on shower heads and faucets (simply place a baggie over the paste if using on faucets if needed). Allow paste to sit for 5-10 minutes then gently wipe off with a warm wet washcloth. For tougher spots add a little scrubbing action when washing paste off.

Instructions:

Using a funnel add water and soap to the bottle. Add in your essential oils and spray surfaces as needed to cleanse and remove dust and particles that settle on your furniture and fans as needed. Gently wipe away spray with a reusable cloth.
